Program ProfileAgricultural Economics is an applied social science and aims efficient use of scarce resources such as land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship and best utilization of the products. In this context, it deals with application of the principles and methods used in economics and management to the agriculture, food and agricultural input sectors. Agricultural Economics is also concerned with cause and result relations as in Economics and tries to solve the problems of agriculture, food and agricultural input sectors by using scientific methods and economic theory. The objective of graduate study program of Agricultural Economics Department is to teach to the students basic principles and concepts of agricultural and resource economics and management. There are many successful agricultural economists and managers employed in agro-industrial enterprises such as food industry, fertilizer factories. In addition, Agricultural Economists who have taken rural sociology and extension courses are effective in giving extension services to the farmers and in the formation of successful relations between the industrial enterprises and farmers.
Occupational Profiles of GraduatesMany of the graduates from The Department of Agricultural Economics are employed in The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Livestock, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization managers, applicators and researchers. In negotiation process with European Union and within the concept of compatibility to EU Common Agricultural Policy, rural development agencies are established where agricultural economists can be employed. As a result of The Law of Agricultural Insurance passed from The Parliament, agricultural economists will be employed in the agricultural departments of insurance companies. Besides, as the consequence of the decline in agricultural credit funds of Turkish Agricultural Bank and decrease of interests in credit market agricultural credit departments are opened in commercial banks and agricultural economists are employed in these banks as “customer service representatives of those banks”.
